Jeff Davis – “a drummer and composer of sure footing but adventurous inclination,” according to the New York Times – returns to Sound It Out to present his new all-star electro-acoustic quintet The Fastness, featuring Tony Malaby (tenor & soprano saxophones), Jonathan Goldberger (guitar), Russ Lossing (piano, Fender Rhodes, Hammond B3 organ) and Eivind Opsvik (double-bass). These longtime kindred spirits will be celebrating the release of their first album together, The Fastness (Fresh Sound). It’s a record of kaleidoscopic dynamism, spanning Jeff’s influences from the Tony Williams Lifetime (“Go Away Glasses”) to Radiohead (“Wednesday Shirt”) to Morton Feldman (“Two Ones”). “Other bands I’ve led have had a more singular sound, but this quintet has a shape-shifting quality, constantly changing – from dark and mysterious to grooving and bright,” Jeff explains. “You need a high level of trust to play music this freely, this openly, and the five of us have played together in various configurations for nearly 20 years – we know each other in a really deep way. The Fastness is sort of an improvising chamber group, one that can be atmospheric or really rock.”
