TICKETS: $35 (including free wine after-party); advance tickets at Eventbrite, or cash at the door

No classic jazz composer’s art so lives and breathes night after night on bandstands across the country and around the world like that of Thelonious Monk. Melodically, harmonically, rhythmically and texturally, Monk’s music is always itself – fresh and accessible, surprising and renewable – even as it is interpreted by generation after generation, yielding new possibilities no matter the instrumental and stylistic variables. “Round Midnight,” “Straight, No Chaser,” “Epistrophy,” “In Walked Bud,” “Well, You Needn’t,” the list of timeless tunes goes on and on.

To celebrate its 7th anniversary, the Sound It Out series is presenting a sequel to the sold-out “Monk on Guitars” fundraising extravaganza of 2015. This time, the revolving lineup of guitarists features Andy Summers of The Police (whose 1999 all-Monk album Green Chimneys is a highlight of his solo discography). He’ll play a mini-set within the night’s main set. The lineup also includes, as bandleader/stage czar, the great young guitarist Nick Millevoi. Returning from the 2015 show is guitarist Miles Okazaki (who recently recorded the complete works of Monk on solo guitar), along with David Gilmore and Steve Cardenas. New faces this time include guitarists Ricardo Grilli and Harvey Valdes. Joining these guitarists will be bassists Michael Formanek, Stephan Crump and Jerome Harris, as well as drummers Francisco Mela, Satoshi Takeishi, Richie Barshay and Kate Gentile.

Net ticket proceeds will go to help fund Greenwich House Music School, whose wonderful hospitality makes Sound It Out possible. Advance tickets: https://www.eventbrite.com/e/monk-on-guitars-2-tickets-63581321444 or, much appreciated, cash at the door.
