2019 Concerts

Dec. 5: Devin Gray’s GPS Trio + Wendy Eisenberg

DATE: THURSDay, DECEMBER 5
TIME: 7:30 P.M.
TICKETS: $15 ($12 students/seniors)

Ever-evolving drummer-composer Devin Gray – who played the second show in the Sound It Out series back in 2012 and has come back many times since as a leader and sideman – returns to the Greenwich House stage to celebrate the release of the first album with his trio featuring saxophonist Chris Pitsiokos and bassist Luke Stewart. About Devin’s art, Jazzwise magazine has said: “A musician-drummer rather than a drummer-drummer, Gray is interested in making music that is deeply evocative… shaped by a fizzing, often restless push-pull energy.”

Reflecting on his new trio, Devin says: “When I think about Chris and Luke as players and improvisers, I’m drawn to the energy of life that they bring to each of their deeply personal sounds. The trio recording we’ve made – due out via my Rataplan label at the end of November – is something that I’ve been working toward for years, in terms of the dynamic between the three of us. To me, it sounds very much like music of today, like the modern life we all live, that odd mix of the comfortable and the uncomfortable, if you know what I mean. These guys are totally real – and that’s the sort of energy that I, as a drummer and composer, always strive to channel. I’m excited to share our music – not only with the new record but what we do live, which always feels special to me.”

Devin’s hand-picked solo opener for the show is guitarist Wendy Eisenberg. Billboard magazine has said that Wendy can play “with the ferocity of a cobra,” as well as disarm with the poetically contemplative. She has performed with the likes of Matt Mitchell, Trevor Dunn, Ches Smith and Joe Morris, as well as premiered works by John Zorn and Maria Schneider. About the guitarist, Devin says: “Wendy Eisenberg is a musician I admire – she’s one of the striking young American voices on the guitar, a player you can just feel growing in all the right directions for the music. Her unique approach to improvising is something that New York audiences really need to hear more and more of – that’s why I’m so glad that she is on this Sound It Out bill with us. I hope she joins our trio for an encore at Greenwich House!”

Guitarist Norman Westberg -- a longtime member of Swans and maker of sublime ambient guitar works -- kindly played a solo show in the Sound It Out series at Greenwich House on June 27, 2019, which happened to be his birthday. Now he has a new album, "A Walk in the Park," which artfully sequences excerpts of six solo concerts from across the world (with the last track eventually enveloped by convivial audience chatter to help underscore what we have been missing in the plague times). The album's first track is titled "Greenwich House/Another Birthday," and it's an evocative slice from that 2019 Sound It Out performance. "A Walk in the Park" is a characteristically beautiful record from Norman, and it's available on Bandcamp from the Switzerland-based Hallow Ground label.
In December 2013, saxophonist-arranger John O'Gallagher led his fantastic Webern Project band in the Sound It Out series at NYC’s Greenwich House Music School, with vibist Matt Moran, bassist Johannes Weidenmuller, drummer Tyshawn Sorey, guitarist Pete McCann, pianist Russ Lossing and vocalist Margret Grebowicz. I’ve re-posted on Medium my Listen magazine feature story about the making of John’s arrangements of Anton Webern’s music and the “Webern Project” album: https://bradleybambarger.medium.com/crossing-borders-john-ogallagher-s-second-viennese-sax. The series of wonderful photos here from Greenwich House are by Eliseo Cardona — many thanks, Eliseo. The story on Medium includes extensive quotes from John, as well as input from Russ Lossing and Irish composer Ian Wilson.
The passing of the pianist and teacher Frank Kimbrough last week is so heartbreaking. Frank was such a kind, generous, wise and deeply soulful man, the best sort of Southern gentleman and the effortless personification of hip. He played the Sound It Out concert series multiple times, including early on -- when his imprimatur meant a lot. Frank was a true poet at the piano. To single out just one, his performance of the blues "Spoonful" at Greenwich House is a precious memory of deep music-making in the moment. And his many recordings are the epitome of jazz beauty -- from his last trio LP, "Solstice," to his solo album, "Air," to his valiant quartet boxed set covering all of Thelonious Monk's compositions, "Monk's Dreams," naming just a few. Everyone should read the lovely obituary that Nate Chinen wrote for WBGO.org. Sound It Out sends its condolences to his family and friends, as well as his Juilliard students. The world is less without Frank Kimbrough.
Guitarist Nels Cline of Wilco – among much else – has performed multiple times in the Sound It Out series, including participating in our first all-star “Monk on Guitars” fundraising concert, in June 2017. It was a spectacular night, with a packed house and much money raised for NYC’s Greenwich House Music School (which has kindly hosted the series since 2012). I just re-published via Medium my 2016 Listen magazine feature on Nels and his lushly orchestrated double-LP “Lovers,” see here: https://bradleybambarger.medium.com
Guitarist Andy Summers of The Police kindly headlined Sound It Out’s all-star “Monk on Guitars 2” fundraising concert in June 2019, helping to make it a rocking night and raise money for NYC’s Greenwich House Music School. I posted my 2018 Mix magazine cover story on Andy here: https://bradleybambarger.medium.com. Photo by Mo Summers.
Saxophonist-composer Tim Berne – who inaugurated the Sound It Out series with his band Snakeoil back in June 2012 – has released a mighty live Snakeoil album via the Swiss label Intakt. Titled “The Deceptive 4,” the double-disc set ranges from 2009 to 2017. The album cover is by Steve Byram. I wrote the set’s liner notes, also posted on sounditoutnyc.com...
