Ethan Iverson and Orrin Evans – the once and future pianists of The Bad Plus, the hit alt-jazz trio that has brought a broad-minded new sensibility and wider audience to the music – join together to duet on the double Steinways at Greenwich House, performing the tunes of Thelonious Sphere Monk for the bebop icon’s 100th birthday. Ethan is leaving The Bad Plus after 17 years, with Orrin replacing him in the trio as of Jan. 1, 2018. With these two star pianists joining hands, as it were, it’s a special occasion. Ethan says, “This isn’t just a normal gig. It’s emotional.” The two artists are coming together to play the evergreen music of Monk – on the occasion of “100 years of Sphere,” as Ethan puts it. It’s a rare Monday night concert in the Sound It Out series, with Monk’s centennial the next day.
