Last fall’s Sound It Out show by Anna Webber‘s Simple Trio so rocked the house that the saxophonist/flutist is returning with pianist Matt Mitchell and drummer John Hollenbeck for an encore show this spring. Anna and company will be playing material from the trio’s latest album, Binary (Skirl). Praising the band’s first record at length, The New York Times said: “Simple is her best work yet, recorded with two of the best musicians working in New York’s high-concept avant-garde: pianist Matt Mitchell and drummer John Hollenbeck. These pieces are bracing and engineered to show the range of the group: intense collective improvisation; rapid, chromatic steeplechases; research into long tones and textures.” All About Jazz, reviewing Binary, commended it as “an affecting… collection of sonorities and melodies.”
