Avant-jazz songbird Fay Victor has performed some of Sound It Out’s most exciting shows ever, namely with her wonderful Herbie Nichols Sung band. This season, the singer returns with another special event – In Praise of Ornette. A unique homage to the late, great Ornette Coleman, Victor’s project sets her words to the free-jazz icon’s classic music, backed by a knockout quartet featuring saxophonist Darius Jones, bassist Sean Conly and guitarist Kenny Wessel. Step Tempest has said evocatively of Victor: “If you have never seen her perform live, she is joy incarnate. She scats, she wails, coos, squalls, caresses, plays with words as if writing a play on stage, and does so with a twinkle in her eye.”
