All About Jazz has said: “André Matos is a free thinker,” while The New York Times has praised the Portuguese-born guitarist as one who “advances a pointedly contemporary air.” A keen collaborator onstage and on record with his wife, vocalist Sara Serpa, Matos has his own sound and sensibility as a leader, alternately lush and edgy. As for pianist-composer Jesse Stacken, The New York Times described his recent quartet album, “Helleborus,” as “scintillating” and “beautiful,” also pointing out “the quality of his cohesion with Tony Malaby, Sean Conly and Tom Rainey. At every turn on ‘Helleborus,’ the ensemble plays with gusto.” The linchpin of both bands on this night is saxophonist Tony Malaby, who DownBeat has described as “a musician’s musician, one of New York’s most beloved creative artists.”
