Feb. 6: Renku

Renku

DATE: Saturday, Feb. 6
TIME: 8 P.M.

Michael Attias, alto saxophone; John Hebert, double-bass; Satoshi Takeishi, drums

One of Sound It Out’s favorite New York bands, Renku, returns to the stage of Greenwich House Music School to celebrate the release of their live album — recorded in the series at Greenwich House in 2014. The beautifully produced “Live in Greenwich Village,” released by Clean Feed this month, features the telepathic trio of saxophonist Michael Attias, bassist John Hebert and drummer Satoshi Takeishi at the top of their game. There will be a free wine meet-and-greet after the show!

From The NY Times: DEVIN GRAY’S GPS TRIO AND WENDY EISENBERG at Greenwich House Music School (Thursday, Dec. 5, 7:30 p.m.). Here are two young improvising musicians and bandleaders to watch: Gray is a drummer with a busy, pattering style leavened by his awareness of space and dimension. Eisenberg boasts a wide expressive range on guitar and banjo, sometimes playing in lonely, resounding single notes, elsewhere in convexly shaped chords. Gray will perform here in a trio with Chris Pitsiokos on alto saxophone and Luke Stewart on double bass, while Eisenberg will play a solo-guitar set. This show is part of the continuing Sound It Out concert series. 212-242-4770, sounditoutnyc.com. #jazz #drums #guitar #nyc #sounditoutnyc #greenwichhousemusicschool @devingraymusic #chrispitsiokos #devingray #lukestewart #wendyeisenberg
Tonight, Nov 9 @ 8:00! Drummer-bandleader Francisco Mela – who has thrilled Sound It Out audiences in multiple shows, including both sold-out “Monk on Guitars” fundraisers in the series – returns to Greenwich House Music School to lead his own inventive MPT Trio with saxophonist Hery Paz and guitarist Juanma Trujillo, plus special guest Cooper-Moore on piano/percussion. Mela – who has been described as “one of the most important Cuban drummers in jazz” by JazzTimes, with a style that’s “expressive” and “expansive” according to All About Jazz – has played with the heavy-weight likes of McCoy Tyner, Joe Lovano, John Scofield, Jason Moran, Chucho Valdés, Mark Turner, Lionel Loueke and Kris Davis. The iconic pianist Tyner has said: “Mela is just a fantastic player. He has his own style and his own sound.” Join us! @musicandmela @guanbanoel @hery_paz #cooper-moore #jazz #nyc #drums @ghmusicschool #franciscomela
